How BMI is calculated

01
Choose your units
Select metric (kg and cm) or imperial (lbs and inches/feet). Both produce identical results — just enter whichever measurements you have available.
02
Enter weight and height
Weigh yourself without shoes or heavy clothing for the most accurate result. Use your height without shoes. Minor changes in these numbers have a small effect on BMI.
03
Read your result
Your BMI number, category (underweight, normal, overweight, or obese), and position on the visual scale are shown instantly. The highlighted row in the table shows your category.

The metric BMI formula is: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². For imperial: BMI = (weight(lbs) ÷ height(in)²) × 703. The World Health Organisation defines normal weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9.

BMI is a useful screening tool but has known limitations — it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat mass, and does not account for age, sex, or body fat distribution. Use it as a starting point for conversation with a healthcare professional, not as a definitive health verdict.
